October 2017
On 5 October in Torquay Mission representatives were presented with an Outstanding Award for the Falmouth Mission Garden in the Royal Horticultural Society’s South West in Bloom Awards, and on 19 October at the Eden Project, Cornwall was awarded a Cornwall Community Celebration Award.
Falmouth Mission’s garden was judged for the South West in Bloom Awards in July, and Lord Julian & Lady Emma Fellowes handed out the Award at the Imperial Hotel, Torquay, where Falmouth Town’s entry also won Best Coastal Town.
Falmouth Mission sees its garden as a vitally important arm of its care for seafarers. Mission Volunteer, Graham Hall, who designed and looks after the garden throughout the year, himself a seafarer of some 37 years, said “we are delighted – the garden is much appreciated by seafarers who enjoy the sights and sounds of the garden after being at sea for lengthy periods and it is good for their health and well-being to have an oasis away from the ship to relax in”.
The Cornwall Community Celebration Awards recognise “volunteer groups and their contribution to making the communities in Cornwall as strong and vibrant as they are”, the Awards are sponsored by Cornwall Council and Cormac.
Jacqui Owens, representing Falmouth Town Council Cultural Services and Cormac, nominated The Mission to Seafarers as she felt that “the work The Mission does really needs to be celebrated”.
