In 2023, the Adventure Race Japan (ARJ) made an unforgettable impact – 64 teams from 19 countries raced across the breathtaking Izu Peninsula in Japan, raising a staggering $1.3 million to support seafarers around the globe. Now, with our expanded field of competitors, we’re aiming even higher, our goal for 2025 is to raise $1.7 million to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of seafarers.
From May 15th to 18th, 100 teams will take on a two-day challenge, combining hiking or running with orienteering. The ARJ offers two race categories: the Green Dragon Race, ideal for a scenic yet energetic hike, and the more challenging Black Dragon Race, featuring extended runs and steeper elevations. Whether an experienced athlete or pushing personal limits, participants will find an exhilarating experience while supporting seafarers worldwide.
While ARJ is a test of endurance, it’s about more than just the race. As Jan Webber, Director of Development, The Mission to Seafarers, explains, “This event isn’t just a race; it’s a statement. It’s a chance for people from all corners of the globe to unite under a common cause.”
Set against Japan’s vibrant backdrop, a key global shipping hub, ARJ also serves as a networking platform for the maritime industry. Leaders within the sector connect beyond the trail, aligning business goals while raising funds for seafarer welfare. This year, Mitsui O.S.K Lines returns as a Platinum sponsor. As well as Swire Shipping and Swire Bulk, APM Terminals, Arrow Shipping, and North Standard supporting as Gold sponsors. Additional sponsors include UK P&I Club, Womar Shipping, Abo Shoten, Norstar Shipping, Ben Lines, and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM).
Jeremy Sutton, CEO, Swire Shipping and ARJ committee member, said, “As a sponsor since the inaugural event in 2023, Swire Shipping are thrilled with the growth in interest that ARJ has generated over the past two years. We are excited to participate once again in 2025 and hope that collectively with all the other teams, participants, and sponsors, we can raise record funds for the work the Mission does to provide welfare and support to Seafarers.”
Funds raised support the Emerging Port Strategy 2022-2026, an ambitious plan by The Mission to Seafarers (MtS) to expand its global operations. MtS operates in over 200 ports worldwide, providing critical support to the 1.89 million seafarers who keep international trade flowing. These men and women work in harsh, isolating conditions, spending months away from their families. Without organisations like MtS, their challenges would be even greater.
Jan adds: “Seafarers play an indispensable role in the global economy, but their work is often unseen. Events like ARJ raise crucial funds and bring awareness to their challenges. Every dollar helps us provide mental health services, emergency assistance, and family connections.”
For participants, this is an opportunity to test endurance, network with maritime leaders, and experience Japan’s beauty. The race will build lasting relationships and a sense of accomplishment beyond the finish line.
For us, it’s about ensuring seafarers and their families receive the support they need. The funds raised will help MtS expand services and meet evolving needs. Whether providing emergency assistance, mental health support, or connecting seafarers with loved ones, MtS remains committed to being there whenever needed.
We’ll be sharing stories and photos from this year’s event, so stay tuned. We’d love to hear from you, whether cheering for a team, celebrating participants, or preparing for ARJ, share your messages on social media using #ARJ2025.
