Nominations now open! The Mission to Seafarers annual Seafarers’ Awards Singapore 2022 is open for nominations

12th May 2022
Annual awards highlight the importance of seafarers’ welfare, and recognise organisations and individuals that offer global support.

The Mission to Seafarers,  announces that the Seafarers’ Awards Singapore 2022 is open for nominations. The annual ceremony recognises individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to improving the welfare of seafarers.

This year’s event will take place on 6th October 2022 and is the first in-person ceremony since the global pandemic caused the Seafarers’ Awards to take a two-year virtual hiatus. The prestigious awards will honour the commitment and contributions to seafarer wellbeing made by seafarers, shore staff and shipping companies around the globe.

Seafarer welfare and recognition are of vital importance. However, the Mission’s latest Seafarers Happiness Index report showed the lowest seafarer satisfaction scores to date. The industry must urgently tackle the perennial problems of shore leave and connectivity and provide extra support to manage the impact that unprecedented world events are having on seafarers’ wellbeing and mental health.

The awards ceremony and gala dinner will be hosted in Singapore, a key shipping hub which has now fully ‘re-opened’ for international travel, ending its quarantine requirement for vaccinated arrivals. This means plenty of networking opportunities for guests, including maritime’s key industry players. Expect food, drinks and music to accompany the awards, celebrating our in-person return after two very successful virtual events during the pandemic.

The award categories for outstanding contributions to seafarers’ welfare are:

  1. Seafarer’s Award – The seafarer who has made a significant contribution to welfare at sea
  2. Shore-based Award – The shore-based person who has made a significant contribution to seafarers’ welfare
  3. Innovation Award – For the company who has embraced a new programme, project or training which has enhanced seafarers’ welfare.
  4. Cadet Award – for the Cadet or Trainee who has made a significant contribution to seafarers’ welfare at sea or ashore
  5. Secretary General Award – The person or company who has shown sustained efforts to improve seafarers’ welfare at sea or ashore
  6. Rescue Award – The person or company who has coordinated a successful rescue operation to save lives at sea.

We would like to thank our generous Gold sponsors, Shell & BHP, who have supported the Seafarers’ Awards Singapore event for five consecutive years. Likewise, thank you to our Silver Sponsors, North, Bureau Veritas, SMOU, SOS, and Drinks Reception Sponsor, HFW.

Captain Robert Walker, Chairman, The Mission to Seafarers Singapore, said:

“We are delighted to be working on this year’s Seafarers Awards Event in Singapore in recognition of individuals and groups who have made special efforts of dedication to the welfare of seafarers both at sea and ashore. This will be our 5th consecutive year and we have seen deserving nominations grow stronger particularly through the recent challenging pandemic years. At the Mission we have dedicated our work to caring for seafarers and recognize that collectively the more work the industry does in raising the awareness and concern for seafarer welfare, the more productive and safer the industry will be for all.”

Rashpal Bhatti, Vice President Maritime & Supply Chain Excellence, BHP, said:

“The MtS Seafarer Awards provide a critical window of opportunity for the global community, to appreciate seafarers’ industry and dedication; their contribution on the world stage, arguably as important as frontline healthcare workers. BHP is proud to support MtS, but we also are very mindful that whatever we do, doesn’t go far enough to recognise the seafarers of the world.”

Nick Potter, GM, Asia Pacific Middle East, Shipping & Maritime, Shell, said:

“The 2022 Seafarer Awards celebrate and shine a light on the continuing essential work our seafarers do – and that recognition remains just as critical after two years of pandemic challenges.

The safety, welfare and happiness of those onboard our ships remains a priority for Shell and we are honoured to support the critical work of the Mission and the dedication of the Mission’s chaplains and staff helping seafarers in ports around the world.”

Join us in-person to celebrate the contributions to welfare made by seafarers worldwide.
