A new initiative in partnership with the Seafarers Hospital Society and Community Heartbeat equips MtS UK seafarers centres with life-saving defibrillators.
In May 2023 the Mission to Seafarers, South Tees Branch Committee (UK), were successful in securing a grant-funded defibrillator from the Seafarers Hospital Society (SHS).
Following this acquisition the Mission contacted the CEO of SHS, exploring the possibility of extending this initiative to other Mission to Seafarers UK centres. The answer was a resounding ‘yes’ and all ten centres in the UK have now received this vital equipment, which is making a significant step towards ensuring the safety of seafarers traversing through these ports.
These defibrillators, generously donated and supported with ongoing maintenance and training, are now fully operational and linked to the local ambulance services.
Saving lives on land
The overarching aim of this project is unequivocal: Defibrillators are life-saving devices that are commonplace in communities around the UK. By strategically placing defibrillators at seafarer centres, the Mission aims to mitigate the risks associated with cardiac emergencies among seafarers and port personnel.
The partnership between the Mission and SHS, covered through a Memorandum of Understanding, demonstrates the commitment in the industry to prioritising the safety and welfare of those who work tirelessly at sea, at all times.
A spokesperson for the project commented ‘This was initially a volunteer-led initiative for just one centre and now ten MtS UK seafarer centres are equipped with life saving devices for seafarers.’
