Calling all those in shipping to join the maritime champions who have helped raise £78k through Global Champions Unite.
We would like to thank all of our Global Champions, Guy Platten, the IMO, Ardmore Shipping, Anglo Ardmore, Thome Ship Management, Shell, Port of London Authority, Fratelli Cosulich Bunkers, and those who have supported the campaign.
Launched in April 2020, Global Champions Unite is an international campaign in which participants have 90 days to reach their challenge goal. We have surpassed our initial target of £60k and hope the shipping industry will help us raise a new one of £100k to contribute towards our Covid-19 responses worldwide.
On the 19th of September, Team IMO, joined by Andrew Wright, Secretary General of The Mission to Seafarers, rode 100km around Richmond Park in London. Parallel rides in Lima, Paris, and Wellington, New Zealand also took place. Donate to their challenge here.
Guy Platten, ICS Secretary General, who ran a half marathon in May and also took part in the recent IMO ride had this to say,
As an ex seafarer, I experienced first hand the work and value of MtS. To call into a port far away from home and know that there were friendly faces to help and often a welfare centre to enjoy away from the ship were so important. During this pandemic crisis, the pastoral care of MtS is even more vital and the work they have been doing to support our seafarers through these difficult times has been exceptional.
With the cancellation of so many charity events, it is essential that we look at innovative ways to raise the funds that keep charities like MtS going. The Global Champions Unite campaign is a great initiative. I ran a half marathon on an old treadmill in my garage in support and was gobsmacked to raise £18.5k! What could you do!!
Global Champions Unite is a great opportunity to get active or to take on a challenge to support your physical and mental wellbeing. Many companies have also used the challenge as a great team-building opportunity, bringing together socially-distanced colleagues in support of a common cause.
Ardmore Shipping with their partners Anglo Ardmore and Thome Ship Management initiated Sporting for Seafarers, raising £14,500 over a month with the grand finale of their challenge taking place on International Day of a Seafarer. The PLA and Fratelli Cosulich Bunkers also took on team initiatives for which The Mission is incredibly grateful.
There is still time to take on a challenge of your own! Take part and help us support seafarers around the globe.
All the funds raised from Global Champions Unite will contribute towards our Flying Angel Campaign, created in response to the Covid-19 crisis.
As individuals or teams, you can design your challenge to suit you or your company whilst adhering to the government guidelines in your country so that we all stay safe and well. Please take a moment to explore this further.
Simply donate or download the event leaflet for more information on how to create your challenge.
