June 2017
With the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Day of the Seafarer 2017 rapidly approaching, a team of six IMO staff members have cycled 100km around London to raise money for the Mission to Seafarers, demonstrating their commitment to this year’s theme: ‘Seafarers Matter’.
The team joined thousands of other cyclists to complete the London Night Ride, which took place overnight, with the route passing landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and Covent Garden. So far, their fundraising total stands at £3,700, which has been donated directly to the Mission to Seafarers.
Laura Brown, Corporate Engagement Manager at the Mission to Seafarers commented: “This tangible support from the IMO, so close to the Day of the Seafarer, shows the extent to which companies and individuals can contribute to the work the Mission to Seafarers carries out across the globe. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Seafarers Matter’, and the IMO team have shown how much they support this message with their fantastic effort.”
Aubrey Botsford, Acting Director, IMO Administrative Division, added:
“The Mission to Seafarers provides fantastic and truly comprehensive support to seafarers in every corner of the globe. We know that our fundraising will allow the Mission to continue this work, providing everything from food, to legal advice and even internet connectivity to our seafarers. The cycle ride was tough, but a small price to pay in order to make a difference to a charity that works on the ground with seafarers.”
The IMO staff members who completed the ride were Aubrey Botsford, Mark Combe, Fred Kenney, Ingrid López-Cardona, Alfonso Roca and Shaun Rogers from the Marine and Coastguard Agency.
