Eight Leading Industry Players Back New Ground-Breaking Event

16th February 2023
MtS’ Adventure Race Japan receives a brilliant response from the maritime industry for its highly anticipated fundraising challenge in support of seafarers’ welfare

The Mission to Seafarers is delighted to share the huge success in uptake so far for its Adventure Race Japan 2023. This is MtS’ first bespoke maritime industry challenge of its kind in Asia, and sign-ups for participants and sponsors will close at the end of February.

Seafarers are vital in maintaining our current way of life and without them the global economy would grind to a halt. Often under-appreciated, seafarers work in dangerous conditions, faced with isolation, fatigue, mental and physical health issues, and the risk of abandonment, shipwreck, and piracy. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these pre-existing challenges, making life at sea even more critical for seafarers.

The Adventure Race Japan (ARJ) is taking place between 18 – 21 May 2023 on the Izu Peninsula, Japan, regarded as a place of outstanding natural beauty and a designated UNESCO Geopark. The Mission to Seafarers designed this race to raise awareness and offer a way for the international shipping community to show its appreciation for seafarers and their welfare. The event also pulls together many strands of the industry for valuable networking and business opportunities, unparalleled in other events.

Eight Gold sponsors lead the sponsorship field – Swire Shipping, Swire Bulk, MOL, Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ocean Network Express, APM Terminals Japan, Arrow Shipbroking Group and Fleet Management Ltd. They are part of the impressive 35 sponsors secured by the volunteer committee.

Key to the success of this event is in the funds raised by corporate and team sponsorship. Each dollar is vital and we are encouraging the 58 teams registered to raise as much as they can through fundraising. If you would like to donate to this event, please go to the Donate page.

The Adventure Race Japan is a team-based endurance event that offers two levels of participation to accommodate different fitness levels – running or hiking. This two-day trail race includes team building challenges, and paddleboarding that tests participants’ teamwork, innovation, and analytical skills, with performance being factored into determining the winning team. The ARJ also provides valuable networking opportunities for key decision makers in the maritime industry, including a gala dinner, offering a rare opportunity to enhance business objectives through face-to-face team building and communication.

The funds raised through the Adventure Race Japan will be used to fund MtS ‘Emerging Port Strategy 2022-2026’, which provides a strategic approach to existing and new operations in Asia and globally. Funds will be used to expand our work in Singapore, develop MtS Sustainability and ESG programme, support our Family Support groups in the Philippines and India as well as much more. The success of the Adventure Race Japan and the support it raises will play a crucial role in helping The Mission to Seafarers achieve its goals and continue to provide vital services to seafarers around the world.
