Robert Chambers Oliver

02/08/1933 - 05/12/2024

My Father Bob Oliver was born in Co Durham, he served his engineering apprenticeship at Vickers-Armstong on the River Tyne.

Going to sea with the Merchant Navy initially for National Service but returning in 1958 as he didn’t settle back onshore.

He sailed with British and Commonwealth. His favourite ship being the Edinburgh Castle on the South Africa run.

He came ashore in shore in 1967 moving his wife Terry & young daughter Anne to Scotland.

Bob served as a Senior Ship Surveyor in the Dept of Trade & Industry Glasgow office. He travelled to Scandinavia to oversee the building of many ferries and back in Glasgow the QE2.

In 1974 he moved yet again to Southampton as the Technical Director of the expanding P&O and Princess Cruises fleet. This was a dream role in which he remained until his retirement in 1993.

After 47 years living in Hampshire I moved my parents to London to be close to Family.
