15/07/1934 - 17/09/2024
Patrick commenced his maritime career in October 1950 as a Cadet with Messrs. Frank C Strick & Co of Swansea aboard the MV Baharistan. In nearly 20 years in the Merchant Navy he travelled across the world and often used the facilities provided by the Mission to Seafarers in far off ports. Separated from his wife and young family and without the benefit of modern day communications, the Mission to Seafarers provided an opportunity to phone home, have a meal, relax with seafarers from around the world, speak to the chaplain and even attend social functions.
Patrick obtained his Master’s F G Certificate in 1961 and was a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve. From 1961 to 1968 he worked for Palm Line obtaining the rank of Master. On leaving the Merchant Navy in 1968, Patrick became a Trinity House London District Pilot based out of Harwich where he served for 20 years.
After his 40 years’ service in the maritime industry, Patrick, along with his wife and four children, retired to a small farm where he was able to enjoy his other lifelong interest – the countryside and farming, breeding pigs and sheep. But it was his seafaring days that had the biggest impact on his life and he was a proud supporter of the Mission to Seafarers.
Patrick passed away at his home in Suffolk on 17 September 2024.
