Christopher (Chris) Westwood

In memory of

Christopher (Chris) Westwood
19/04/1943 - 29/01/2026

Chris was my husband, soulmate and sailing partner for 38 years.

Chris’s great passion was sailing and all things maritime from an early age.

He made, reclaimed and sailed many wooden dinghies/boats in 1960s – 80s including Mirrors, Enterprises, Moths, Wayfarers & Scorpions.

Chris taught sailing on the Thames in dinghies at Deptford Sailing Centre, ILEA-funded evening classes, for 10 years in 1970s – 80s.

He was a member of most sailing clubs on the Thames & Medway in dinghies and cruisers. He was dinghy captain & secretary at GYC and a committee member at EYC.

He loved to race and win, despite saying he was not competitive.

He also enjoyed cruising particularly up the East Coast, though made trips to Calais and Dartmouth too.

Chris was a voracious reader with an amazing memory. He loved to read and attend lectures on all aspects of maritime history and sailors/mariners experiences.

Chris was an avid collector of marine paintings, books, ships in bottles and marine ephemera, always searching for things to the betterment of his collection.

Remember Chris helming Rochelle on a warm summer’s race evening with a can of beer in his hand and a smile of contentment on his face.
