Our Dad, Bernard, was a member of the Merchant Navy in the UK from 1956-1964 and had many occasions to use the Missions to Seafarers services during this time. Firstly in East London in 1957 when he was awaiting his call up to join the MV Durham (New Zealand Shipping Company), then in Brisbane and Melbourne, where a trip to the Dandenong Ranges had been organised by the Mission of the same year. He recalls in his memoir using a Seamen’s Mission in Hamilton on Lake Ontario in 1960 and fondly recollects the active group of lady volunteers who looked after them. Our Dads love of travel and the ocean never left him and I know he’d be very happy that he can support the Missions to Seafarers in a small way after his passing. |
