September 2026

Introduction

September has been an extremely busy month for the MtS team in Colombo. The team carried out brisk ship visits, resulting in 169 ship visits for the month. In addition, transport assistance was equally busy, with 334 seafarers arriving at the MtS Centre in Colombo, and 332 using the MtS free transport shuttle. Crew from 61 vessels visited the MtS Centre, with 14 making more than one visit this month.

This month, the MtS ship visitor team also met a group of representatives from the Jetty Hiring Taxi service at the MtS Centre. The conversation was positive and constructive, and the meeting was an ideal opportunity for the Jetty Hiring Taxi service to better understand the kind of work MtS engages in.

Ship Visiting

Ship visiting remains the primary activity of the MtS. The priority is reflected even in the careful examination of the monthly statistics. The ship visitor team is conscious of the value of our visit and the opportunity it presents, especially given some of the working environments Seafarers find themselves in.

Ship visiting also takes place amid diverse weather conditions, whether thunder, lightning, rain, or the scorching heat of the day. Beyond the natural elements, the long gangways add to the challenges. However, all these become secondary when we realise there are people waiting to connect with humanity at the top of the gangway.

In the month of September 169 ship visits have been completed.

Home Away from Home

At the MtS Centre, our staff’s primary intention is to offer hospitality and provide a welcoming space. Being available to talk to them, or providing space for solitude, are part of the services offered to seafarers.

The eagerness with which they look forward to coming ashore and relaxing at the Centre brings joy and fulfilment to the Staff at the MtS Centre, as it is often natural to ask whether the services being offered are valued and appreciated.

This month 334 Seafarers visited the Centre while 332 of them sought the assistance of the MtS free transport shuttle.
