Chaplain / Chaplaincy Worker, Port of Piraeus

The Mission to Seafarers is seeking a Chaplain / Chaplaincy Worker to ensure an effective chaplaincy service in Piraeus, in line with our core purpose of providing “spiritual, moral and physical support” to seafarers and their families, of all backgrounds and nationalities. The post holder will represent MtS in and around the Port of Piraeus, particularly with the Port Authorities, Port Committees and other maritime organisations, and will complete the set-up of MtS Greece in Piraeus. There will be a particular focus on supporting female seafarers.

Key duties include delivering a regular ship visiting programme, offering spiritual support (including Christian prayer) where requested, and visiting seafarers in hospital or prison. The post holder will also work with the Deutsche Seemannsmission to respond to emergencies, help resolve seafarers’ justice and welfare issues, build links with St Paul’s Anglican Church and the wider Diocese, and explore local fundraising opportunities. They will recruit and manage a team of volunteers, and report to the Regional Director Europe.

Fluency (spoken and written) in both Greek and English is essential, as is a full, clean driving licence valid in Greece. The post is open to Christians of all denominations, whether or not ordained, who have a strong Christian faith and empathy with MtS’s Anglican roots. Applicants should have strong pastoral experience and an understanding of the challenges faced by female seafarers. The role is full-time (40 hours per week), worked flexibly to fit shipping schedules and including regular weekends. A car is available at the port, and annual leave is 20 days plus public holidays. Priority will be given to applicants who already have the right to live and work permanently in Greece.
