The Mission calls for nominations for 2021 Singapore Seafarers’ Awards

16th February 2021

The Mission to Seafarers has opened nominations for the annual Singapore Awards. The charity is calling for the maritime community to propose individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to improving the welfare of seafarers.

Following one of the most challenging years for seafarers, where many are experiencing extreme isolation, travel restrictions, mental health challenges and other hardships, the Mission is recognising those who have gone above and beyond to help seafarers in their time of need.

This year’s Singapore Seafarers’ Awards will now take place on 5th November 2021 (after being moved from 21st May) and all proceeds from the event will go to The Mission to Seafarers Singapore.

The awards honour the commitment and contributions to seafarers’ welfare made by seafarers, shore staff and shipping companies around the globe. Last year, winners included Bjorn Hodgaard (Anglo-Eastern Ship Management), Frank Coles (Wallem) and Thome.

The five categories for the awards are:

  • Seafarer’s Award – The seafarer who has made a significant contribution to welfare at sea
  • Shore-based Award – The shore-based person who has made a significant contribution to seafarers’ welfare
  • Innovation Award – For the company who has embraced a new programme, project or training which has enhanced seafarers’ welfare
  • Cadet Award – for the Cadet or Trainee who has made a significant contribution to seafarers’ welfare at sea or ashore
  • Secretary General Award – The person or company who has shown sustained efforts to improve seafarers’ welfare at sea or ashore

The Revd Canon Andrew Wright, Secretary General, The Mission to Seafarers, said:

“This special evening is a highly anticipated event in Singapore where leading organisations and individuals gather to recognise the significant role seafarers play in our everyday lives.

“Over the past year, there are individuals and organisations that have gone the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of those at sea at a time when it is most needed. In the face of extraordinary obstacles, we have seen those who have facilitated crew changes, those onboard making a difference to their fellow crew members daily lives with new procedures and those developing technology to help those at sea. These awards are an opportunity to recognise those who have made a difference through their hard work and dedication.

“If you know a colleague, crewmate, seafarer, or a member of shore staff who cares and contributes to the wellbeing of our seafarers, we want to hear from you. This is an opportunity to acknowledge those who have made a real difference when it really matters.”

Rashpal Bhatti, Vice President of BHP Maritime & Supply Chain Excellence, commented:

“BHP is looking forward to the MtS Awards in November which are due to be held in Singapore. This event will celebrate the heroic efforts of seafarers to keep the global economy progressing whilst putting at risk their health and well-being.”

Nick Potter, Head of Shipping and Maritime for Shell in Asia Pacific and the Middle East, said:

“The Mission to Seafarers play a critical role in supporting seafarers. Shell is proud to work with the charity, not just in Singapore but globally, and we look forward to sponsoring the seafarer awards later this year.”

The Awards dinner will take place at Singapore’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and is supported by gold sponsors Shell and BHP, as well as silver sponsors North, Bureau Veritas, Singapore Maritime Officer’s Union (SMOU) and Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS). The event will open with a drinks reception sponsored by HFW.

The deadline for entries is 3rd September 2021.
