The Mariners’ Memorial Chapel of St Peter

Located at 114 Quay Street, the Chapel at the Mission to Seafarers Auckland offered a serene and welcoming space for reflection, prayer, and spiritual nourishment. This sacred space was open to all seafarers, regardless of faith or background, provided a quiet retreat from the busy life at sea and the bustling city. The chapel was opened in 1972, when the Mission to Seafarers moved from Sturdee Street to Quay Street, but some elements of the new chapel were retained from the old memorial chapel, which had been dedicated by Alfred Averill, the Archbishop of New Zealand, on Synod Sunday, 16th October 1932.

A Place of Peace and Reflection

The Chapel served as a sanctuary where seafarers could find peace and solitude. Whether they sought a moment of quiet reflection, needed a space to pray, or wished to attend a religious service, the Chapel was there to meet the spiritual needs of seafarers.
