Limassol New Port opened as the new main port for the southern (Greek Cypriot) part of the island after the Turkish invasion in 1974 and is still developing its facilities. A new Passenger Terminal is planned for completion by 2012. The Port is modest in size but is very busy with merchant shipping all-year round and cruise traffic from late April to early November. The Mission to Seafarers Centre occupies a prominent and easily accessible position inside the Port.
