FRIENDS and supporters of The Mission to Seafarers packed into the church of St Michael Paternoster Royal in the City of London to celebrate the Christmas Story at the annual Carol Concert.

In the presence of the society’s President, HRH The Princess Royal, over 200 people gathered to sing popular carols such as Once in Royal David’s City and I Saw Three Ships and to hear Christmas readings delivered by Guest Readers yachtswoman Tracy Edwards and TV presenter Dan Snow.

Music for the evening came in the form of the Chamber Choir of Burntwood School, South London, who provided a mix of songs which fitted the theme of Carols from Around the World perfectly. British, French, African and American songs filled the main body of the church as the 60-strong choir delivered an assured performance which enthralled and delighted the captivated audience.

This year’s Carol Concert was sponsored by Tindall Riley (Marine) Ltd and brought together a diverse congregation from life-long supporters to business contacts and newcomers – all of whom were keen to learn of the society’s work in providing vital support to the world’s merchant fleet.

“Christmas is a difficult time for seafarers as they spend the season away from their loved ones,” said the Secretary General of the Mission, the Revd Tom Heffer in his opening remarks. “The ‘home away from home’ that the Mission provides in more than 230 ports around the world is, therefore, particularly important and can help ease the pain of loneliness and separation which is felt most keenly during this time of love and celebration.”

After a rousing rendition of O Come All Ye Faithful, The Princess Royal and Guest Readers met with some of the congregation at a reception at Innholders’ Hall. Here, the President took an interest in hearing how supporters are raising much-needed funds and helping to raise the profile of the charity.
