THE MISSION TO SEAFARERS WELLINGTON

Wellington - Our Port

The Port and City of Wellington

Wellington is a picture perfect city. It is set between a magnificent harbour and rolling green hills. It is also a compact city where funky shops, exciting galleries and great restaurants are within easy walking distance.

Visitors recommend a visit to the National Museum (Te Papa) which is on the waterfront about a kilometre from the Seafarers' Centre. Entrance to Te Papa is free so even a quick visit can be economical.

Visitors also like to take the public trolley car (the Cable Car) from down town up to the top of the Botanic Gardens - great view of the city on the way up, and a really cool park to walk through. The terminus is on Lambton Quay in the city centre.

Keen on sports?  The city's main sports venue - the Westpac Stadium - is very close to the port.  National and international events are held here.  If you are lucky you may have the chance to see some of New Zealand's famous rugby football teams in action.

Even if you do not want to go to any of these tourist attractions, the waterfront area south of the port is a very pleasant place just to walk around especially on a nice day. There are many interesting public sculptures (mostly modern) some of which are made to move in Wellington's famous wind. In the same area there is also a nice small Arts Academy and a Museum of City and Sea which are well worth a visit and there is no charge to enter.
